Writing a Job Posting: What You Need to Know to attract the right Accounting or Finance Candidate


When you’re looking to hire someone new, it’s essential to get the job posting right. Notice we said, ‘job posting,’ not ‘job description.’ They are different. A great job posting will ensure that your position stands out and entices the right candidate to respond with their resume.    

Let’s look at how to create an effective job posting that will attract the best candidates and help you find the perfect hire.


When writing a job posting, it is important to keep it short and sweet while conveying all necessary information. According to LinkedIn, shorter job postings (less than 300 words) receive 8.4% more applications per view than others. 

Explain who you want to hire

Describe the ideal candidate in terms of experience, skills, and attitude—this will help potential applicants assess whether they have what it takes to do the job. This is also an opportunity to provide insight into your company culture and share what kind of team member you hope to find. 

Good phrases to use include:     

  • You are good at…
  • You are comfortable with…
  • You see yourself as…
  • You are excited by…
  • You want to learn…


Only include the top 3 duties that the individual you hire will perform. This way, candidates can easily see what they would be responsible for if hired. Keep it brief and stick with what’s most important. Provide examples of actual projects that the new hire may need to complete. 

We’ve heard from candidates that the more bullets there are in a posting, the more overtime you will have to work. Also, maybe a candidate is excited about the company and the position, but they see a word or two they don’t like in the bullets and don’t respond. Less is more.

Day-to-day Life

Describe the day-to-day of the position and explain why it is essential to the team and/or management. Give some context about the why and how it contributes to the overall success of the organization. This will help put things into perspective for potential applicants, which could lead to more qualified individuals applying for your open position.


If your company offers great benefits, give specifics about them so applicants can get an idea of what kind of perks they may receive if hired for the position. Make sure you include salary, as some applicants will only respond if the salary is posted.


When it comes to requirements, don’t use language such as “strong” or “expert” which could scare off some potential applicants who may think they don’t have enough experience. The posting should entice individuals to apply so keep the requirements to a minimum.


Consider creating a video for your job listing. According to a Glassdoor 2018 study, job postings with videos are viewed 12% more than postings without videos. And companies receive 34% more applications when they add a video to their job listings. Videos are an effective way to humanize your brand and attract prospective employees who may not have heard about your company before but could be interested after watching your video. Plus, videos can give applicants a glimpse into your organization’s life, making them feel more connected before they even interview.  


When writing up a job posting for potential hires, remember to keep it short and sweet and incorporate the items above.
