How to Stop Losing Top Candidates to Your Competitors

Are you struggling to find the right hire? You post a job, but the ideal candidates aren’t responding. Or worse, you find yourself losing them halfway through the interview process.

In today’s competitive market, simply having an open role isn’t enough. To land top-tier talent and prevent them from ghosting you, every hiring manager needs to perform a three-step audit of their recruitment process.

1. Review Your Job Posting: Does it Have "Flavor"?

Most job postings are a dry list of tasks and requirements. If yours sounds like every other company’s, it won’t stand out.

  • Paint the Picture: Candidates want to know more than just what they’ll be doing. They want to know why the job matters. They want to understand how they can contribute and where they fit in. Tell them.
  • Move Beyond Benefits: While healthcare and vacation are important, many professionals want to feel like their work has purpose and that they’re actually making a difference.
  • Use AI for Inspiration: If you’re struggling to articulate the “value add” for your role, consider using AI tools to help add some flavor to the description.

2. Be Brave: Ask the Competitive Comparison Question

When you find a candidate you truly like, you need to know where you stand. Don’t be afraid to ask: “How does this position compare to others you’re interviewing for?”

  • Critical Feedback: While some may give a polite answer, be prepared for honest feedback about what might be missing from your offer.
  • Identify Missed Opportunities: You might discover that a candidate thinks you don’t offer something that you actually do. This question allows you to clear up misconceptions in real-time.
  • Market Intelligence: Even if you aren’t their first choice, their answers provide invaluable insight into what your competitors are offering.

3. Let Them Meet the Team

Candidates want to know who they’re going to be working with. Especially at the staff and senior levels, they’re not just evaluating the job itself. They’re also thinking about the day-to-day experience.

Who is my manager? What is the team like? Do these people seem like people I can work well with? Can I picture myself here?

  • Reduce Turnover: Getting the team involved in the interview process ensures that chemistry is right, which reduces the likelihood of having to hire for the same position again in six months.
  • Empower Your Current Staff: Giving your team a voice in the hiring decision makes them feel more engaged and valued within the organization.

Final Thoughts

Before you assume you need to offer more money, take a close look at what candidates are actually experiencing. By painting a better picture in your job posts, communicating openly about the competition, and prioritizing culture fit, you’ll be much better positioned to land the talent you need.
