With the Super Bowl right around the corner, we wanted to have some fun and talk about how you can keep top talent on your roster, just like the Kansas City Chiefs do!
The job market is still very active, and the competition is stiff when hiring. Keeping your top talent prevents you from having to recruit for their position.
It all starts with the head coach. The coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, has been around a long time. He knows how to keep the top talent on his roster by creating a culture that the players want to be part of and don’t want to leave.
Keep your top talent by allowing room for growth!
Yes, some of your top talent might be rookies – and that’s ok. Give them the experience to grow in the company. Remember, most of these “players” are looking for a career, not just a job. Encourage them to continue their education, attend seminars, and cross-train. Maybe they only start out for a play or two, but if you allow them to grow into a starter, they will be less inclined to leave your team.
Treat your team equally and fairly!
Keep your top talent by eliminating any competition between the team members. Focusing on everyone’s strengths will help prevent any unnecessary drama on your team.
It starts with your managers!
Most players leave their team because of poor management. This means it is worth taking the time to find the right managers for your team.
Let’s take a look at the Kansas City Chiefs…last year they were up against the New England Patriots during the AFC Championship game. The game was in Kansas City and the local fans were hoping for a win to go to the Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs made some costly defensive errors, resulting in a loss. In the off-season, Coach Reid replaced his defensive coordinator. One year later, the Chiefs have a top 5 defense and are heading to the Super Bowl. Plus, they are retaining their top talent because of this.
Is top management standing in the way of keeping your top talent?
Can you imagine if Clark Hunt tried to control what Coach Reid did? Would he be as effective? Probably not. The managers closest to the talent should be the ones to guide their career and have the majority of the say.
Keep your top talent happy!
It sounds so cliché, but it’s true. A happy workplace is a place where people want to be. Keep your top talent by finding out what motivates them. Every team player is different. You need to ask them what is important and try to provide it.
Saying yes goes a long way in retaining your top talent!
Players should be able to freely express their ideas. Don’t kill every suggestion that comes your way. You never know, one of those suggestions could end up being the game-winning play.
Train properly from the beginning!
From the very start, take the time to properly train your team. You don’t want your Patrick Mahomes getting frustrated with rookies. Give them the right training and tools to properly excel!
Final Note!
As our owner is from Kansas City, we are of course rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs! Let’s hope we will be happy after the big game on February 2nd!
