From Accounting to Internal Audit: Adam Kayner on Career Versatility | Episode 16

In this edition of Beyond the Numbers, Bernadette Grattan, Founder & Recruiting Director at The Resource Link, is joined by Adam Kayner, Internal Audit Manager at Inspired Healthcare Capital.

The Power of Getting Involved

When asked about advice for his younger self, Adam emphasized the importance of engagement beyond the desk:

“Get involved. Don’t stay in your cubicle. Don’t stay at your desk. Get on committees. Get on teams.”

Adam highlights that accounting offers numerous “flavors” and avenues. By actively participating in various groups and aspects of a company, you:

  1. Gain exposure to different areas
  2. Network within your organization
  3. Showcase your proactivity and ideas

This advice is particularly crucial in larger companies where it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. Even joining something as simple as the “birthday committee” can open doors and help you stand out.

The Journey from Traditional Accounting to Internal Audit

Adam’s career path is a testament to the versatility of an accounting background. Starting in traditional accounting roles and even serving as an assistant controller, he eventually transitioned into internal audit. This shift came as his company expanded nationally, recognizing the need for stronger controls and risk mitigation.

When comparing accounting and internal audit, Adam notes:

“Internal audit, a lot of times you’re looking in the past for compliance issues or things like that. Whereas the controller side, you are looking in the past a little bit, but you’re a little bit more forward thinking as a controller.”

This diverse experience has made Adam a more versatile professional, able to see the bigger picture in financial operations.

Finding Your Accounting “Flavor”

For those starting their careers or looking to advance, Adam’s advice is clear: explore the many facets of accounting to find what resonates with you. Whether it’s internal audit, cost accounting, controller, or another specialization, trying different roles can help you discover your passion.

“If you really like what you do, you’ll do it well. And you’ll be happy doing it.”

Adam’s own journey began as an accidental summer accounting class that changed his career trajectory from engineering to accounting. This experience underscores the importance of remaining open to new opportunities and following your interests.

Key Takeaways for Aspiring Accountants

  1. Get involved beyond your immediate role: Join committees, volunteer for projects, and network within your organization.
  2. Explore different specializations: Accounting offers diverse career paths. Sample various roles to find your niche.
  3. Follow your passion: Identify what aspects of accounting excite you and focus on excelling in those areas.
  4. Be open to change: Your initial career path may evolve. Embrace new opportunities as they arise.

Remember, whether you’re drawn to tax, public accounting, private industry, or internal audit, the key is to find what fits you best and pursue it with enthusiasm. As Adam puts it:

“Try as much as you can. Find something that fits with you and then run with it.”
