Welcome to the July 2024 edition of the “State of the Job Market: Accounting in Phoenix.” In this edition, our founder, Bernadette Grattan, discusses how the Greater Phoenix area’s accounting job market is faring.
Highlights:
- The Accounting job market in Phoenix is strong and shows no signs of slowing.
- After increased hiring during covid, public accounting firms in Phoenix have experienced layoffs.
- Salary expectations are high, but this does not mean companies are meeting expectations.
- The state added 2,023 people to its seasonally adjusted labor force from April to May and 62,120 individuals over the previous year.
Unemployment Rate:
Arizona’s general unemployment rate is declining and currently stands at 3.4%. This is below the national rate of 4.1%.
We place degreed individuals, the National rate for college-degreed individuals is still incredibly low at 2.4%.
Money:
Year-over-year pay gains for job-stayers were 4.9% in June, the slowest pace of growth since August 2021. Pay gains for job-changers also slowed to 7.7%.

According to a recent ranking by Forbes, Tucson and Phoenix made it into the top 20 places to move for new accounting college graduates.
Tucson came in at #3, and Phoenix Metro was #17.
These are Great Numbers! The projected job growth in Phoenix for accountants over the next 8 years is 22%.
