Greater Phoenix Accounting January 2026 Update: AZ Job Market, Salary Trends & CPA Rules

Welcome to the January 2026 State of the Phoenix Area Job Market

In this January 2026 update, we provide a detailed look at the Arizona accounting job market, salary benchmarks, and upcoming changes to the Arizona CPA licensure. Whether you’re a professional exploring opportunities, a hiring manager, or just curious, this report delivers valuable local and national insights.

The Phoenix Accounting Job Market: Stability Over Volume

If you are looking for insights into the Phoenix accounting and finance market, the current landscape is best described as stabilizing. While we are not seeing the same high volume of job postings as in 2024, the market remains active for high-quality talent.

Key trends for accounting jobs in Phoenix include:

  • Increased Selectivity: Hiring managers are becoming more selective, making it challenging for some individuals to find new roles.
  • Flight to Quality: There is a notable “flight to quality,” where professionals with stable work histories are securing positions more easily than those with frequent job changes.

By the Numbers: Arizona Job Postings Data

Recent data highlights specific shifts in accounting and finance placements across Greater Phoenix:

  • Staff & Senior Levels: Remains the most active segment, though adjusted postings dropped from 326 in Dec 2024 to 228 in Dec 2025.
  • Manager Level: Postings saw a decrease from 233 (Dec 2024) to 137 (Dec 2025).
  • Executive Search (CFO & Director): This tier remains tight, with limited openings compared to previous years.

By the Numbers: Nationwide Accounting & Finance Data

Despite local fluctuations, the Indeed Job Tracker Index shows that accounting job postings in Arizona are still 13% above pre-COVID levels. After a dip between April and June 2025 (likely due to tariff announcements) hiring activity has steadily climbed back.

Salary Trends for Finance Professionals in Arizona

The dramatic salary spikes of recent years have tapered off. While the diverse mix of companies in the valley ensures we still see large salary ranges, the market is returning to more sustainable compensation models.

For employers, this means the massive pay increases previously required to recruit talent away from secure roles are no longer the standard. If you need specific benchmarks for your department, our Phoenix area accounting recruiters can provide data on current compensation models.

Legislative Update: New Arizona CPA Requirements (HB 2476 & SB 1181)

A major development for accounting in Phoenix is the introduction of bills HB 2476 and SB 1181, supported by the Arizona Society of CPAs (ASCPA). These bills aim to modernize licensure and widen the talent pipeline with two significant changes:
    1. New “120 + 2” Pathway: Candidates can now obtain a license with a Bachelor’s degree (120 credit hours), an accounting concentration, and 2 years of professional experience, similar to pre-2000 rules.
    2. Individual-Based Mobility: Arizona is shifting away from “Substantial Equivalency” between states to an “Individual-Based” model. This allows CPAs meeting standard requirements to practice across state lines more easily.

Note: The legislation includes “Safe Harbor” language to protect the practice privileges of currently licensed CPAs.
