Graduating in May without a job? Why Phoenix Accounting and Finance graduates shouldn’t be stressed.
You’re about to graduate in May and you don’t have a job lined up. You’re feeling stressed, like you’re the only one in the whole entire world without an offer. But let me tell you this: you’re not alone.
My name is Bernadette, and I’ve been recruiting accounting and finance professionals in the Phoenix area for over 20 years. I’ve helped thousands of hiring managers and professionals find great career opportunities. The advice I’m sharing here is based on that experience — so let’s get into it.
Should You Have a Job Before You Graduate in May?
No. In Phoenix, the reality is that 80% of graduating students will not have a job lined up. This is perfectly normal. You’re still in school.
Here’s what’s happening around you:
Some companies come to campus for career fairs and interviews. Friends are getting offers to start a year in advance. Your parents are asking, “Why don’t you have a job? Everybody else has one!” And on Facebook and LinkedIn, it seems like everyone is celebrating a new offer.
It can feel like you’re falling behind. But the truth is, in the Greater Phoenix Area, only about 20% of companies have a structured on-campus interview program. This means, 80% of them don’t. Let’s break that down.
Who Makes Up That 20%?
Public Accounting Firms (~5%) You know who they are. Students going into public accounting typically receive their offers up to a year in advance and are already part of an internship cohort by their junior year. So yes, that group has had their offers for a while.
Larger Corporate Organizations (~10–15%) Think companies headquartered in Phoenix or with large operations here. Intel, Honeywell, Northwestern, and similar organizations. These companies have larger HR teams that recruit interns, often pulling students in during their junior year. By the time May rolls around, those candidates have completed internships and already have an offer in hand.
Together, that adds up to roughly 20% of the market.
What About the Other 80%?
The rest of the Phoenix economy is made up of small to medium enterprises (SMEs). This is actually what makes our economy so strong compared to other major cities. We have a wide range of companies, but most of them don’t have a formal on-campus recruiting process.
Instead, they follow just-in-time hiring: when they have a need, they fill it. And, when they fill it, they expect someone to start right away, not five months from now.
That means they’re not looking for May graduates in January. They’re looking for you in May and June, when you actually have your degree in hand.
Your Green Light Is Your Degree
If you’re in that 80%, here’s what you need to hear: be patient. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t feel like you don’t have enough experience.
Things will change dramatically once you graduate. May and June are when the Phoenix marketplace opens up for new graduates. Companies with real, immediate needs will be actively looking for candidates exactly like you. Someone with a fresh degree ready to start.
This is how the majority of new graduates in Phoenix find their jobs. It’s not a reflection of your qualifications or your future. It’s simply how this market works.
So hang tight. Explain to your parents what the job landscape actually looks like here and what kinds of businesses make up our economy. And then watch what happens once you walk across that stage.
Good luck in your search!
