Greater Phoenix Accounting & Finance Job Market Update – April 2025
Welcome to the State of the Job Market – April 2025 edition. In this email, we’ll provide insights into the Arizona and US job markets, with a special focus on accounting and finance trends. Whether you’re a professional exploring opportunities, a hiring manager, or just curious, this report delivers valuable local and national insights.
What I see from an Accounting/Finance local perspective:
- While there has been an uptick in the number of Accounting Manager to Controller roles over the last 2 years, there has been a decline in the number of available Staff/Senior Accountant level positions.
- In my 20 years of recruiting, I’ve never seen such a high number of Accounting Manager positions as I’m seeing now.
- A few local Phoenix companies have conducted layoffs recently. On LinkedIn, multiple federal employees are displaying “open to work” status. Interestingly, you can gauge which companies have concerning internal conditions by observing clusters of employees from the same organization marking themselves as “open to work.”
Overall Arizona Job Market Insights:
- Arizona gained 4,300 jobs in February 2025, putting Arizona 15th among all states in monthly job growth.
- Arizona ranks 50th among all states for annual job growth for the second month in a row.
- Arizona’s unemployment rate increased to 4.0% vs. the national rate of 4.1%
- Since the Great Recession, the share of healthcare jobs in the market has grown from 8% of the economy to more than 14%.
By the Numbers
Unemployment Rate:
The unemployment rate in March 2025 for individuals with college degrees was 2.6% (February’s rate was 2.5%).
Compensation Trends:
ADP reports for March 2025 show year-over-year pay gains slowed to 4.6% for job-stayers and to 6.5% for job-changers.

What Middle Market C-Suite Execs are saying:
56% expect their companies to hire more personnel this year
They are experiencing challenges finding talent: Competition from other companies was the top challenge respondents face, cited by 32%, followed closely by a lack of qualified/skilled candidates and rising labor costs, both cited by 31%.
Greatest Challenges for 2025:
- Inflation, 59%
- Interest rates, 44%
- Tariffs, 42%
- Financial market volatility, 39%
- A possible recession, 34%
- Increased taxes, 33%
Key Take Aways
- The accounting/finance job market is shifting, with more mid-level opportunities but fewer Staff & Senior Accountant positions
- Despite overall job losses in Arizona, specialized accounting and finance roles remain in demand
- Compensation growth is slowing but still positive, especially for job-changers
- Economic concerns (inflation, interest rates, Tariffs) continue to dominate business planning
